Women with curly or textured hair often dream of having straight hair with smooth locks. The reason why this isn’t a reality for most women is due to the time and effort required to maintain curly and wavy hair. In order to avoid this hassle, women choose to get their hair rebonded. Many women opt for hair rebonding because of the harmful after-effects of cosmetics and chemicals causing hair loss, split ends and breakage.
Hair rebonding is the latest addition to modern beauty treatments that make your hair straight and smooth. It is an effective technique to turn your hair from messy to mesmerising. Let’s find out more.
Process of Hair Rebonding
Hair is made up of amino acids in the form of proteins. These proteins are linked in chemical bonds that form the structure of your hair. In the hair rebonding process, a chemical is applied to break these bonds and alter your hair’s structure. The complete process takes around 5 to 6 hours.
First of, the hair is divided into sections (after washing and drying) and the chemical relaxant is applied while ensuring that every strand is covered. The chemical relaxant is left for about half an hour then the hair is steamed for around 10 to 30 minutes. After steaming, the hair specialist washes the hair and applies keratin lotion after blow drying. The next step is to straighten the hair with the help of a ceramic flat iron at 180°C and change its structure from curly to straight. Thereafter, a neutraliser is applied to rebuild the bond and seal the altered structure. The neutraliser is left for 30 minutes and then its rinsed out with cold water. Lastly, a serum is applied to keep the hair straight.
Post-Treatment Hair Care
Since hair rebonding is an artificial process, your hair needs proper care after rebonding to avoid hair loss or other side-effects. The key to making the most of hair rebonding is to maintain your hair afterwards and take precautions accordingly. Here are some of the post-treatment care tips-
Do not wet your hair for at least 3 days (72 hours) after rebonding. This will allow the chemicals to soak into the roots, the hair to settle with the new structure and keep it straight for a longer period of time.
Avoid tying your hair for the first month or else it can permanently damage your hair. Even tucking your hair behind ears can cause creases.
Don’t wash your hair with hot or warm water as it can damage your hair. Using cold water for washing is recommended.
After 3 days of rebonding, wash your hair using a mild shampoo and cold water. Apply conditioner generously and let it soak for a few extra minutes to moisturise your hair properly.
Trim your hair at regular intervals because hair rebonding can cause split ends. Trimming will not only keep them in good shape but also encourage hair growth.
Oil and steam your hair regularly for 15 days. Apply oil and wrap a steamed towel around to deep condition your hair.
Use a wide-toothed comb instead of a brush for combing to avoid causing damage to your hair.
Include protein rich fruits and vegetables in your diet to maintain your hair’s health and avoid eating junk food.
Hair rebonding is an effective process to achieve straight and smoother-looking hair. However, it requires great care and protection to keep them healthy and straight for a longer time. Take all precautions and consult a professional hair stylist to get more details on hair rebonding procedure.
