Everyone knows that one shouldn’t go to sleep with the makeup on as it can damage the skin. But, what about going to the gym or working out while wearing full makeup on your face?
Many people head to the gym straight from their work or from an informal gathering while their makeup on. To save time, they skip the process of washing off their faces and start exercising. But, working out with cosmetics on your face is really not good for your skin. Let’s find out why.
How Makeup Affects Your Skin When You Work Out?
When you exercise, the first thing that happens to your skin is sweating. It results in your foundation and powder running down your cheeks. Your glitter eye makeup and mascara flake can also fall into your eye causing irritation.
The second thing that happens to your skin is the relaxing and enlarging of the pores. Exercise increases your blood circulation and opens up the blood vessels on your skin surface to clean impurities while sweat maintains your body temperature. If your skin pores are blocked by cosmetics, it will restrict the flow of sweat and result into clogged pores and breakouts.
Perspiration is important for your skin to flush out toxins from your body and keep your skin free from impurities. Any kind of blockage in this process can be critical in the long run, especially for people who have acne prone skin.
How About Wearing Lightweight Creams to the Gym?
You may think that lightweight creams such as BB creams and moisturizers are harmless as they hydrate the skin. But, they do no good. No matter how good your sweat-proof makeup is, when it gets mixed with your sweat, they are sure to form blackheads, acne and breakouts. However, lip balms and oil-free moisturizers are better options to consider.
What to Do Before Going to the Gym?
Remove all traces of makeup before going to the gym or starting your workout. Firstly, cleanse your skin with a sulfate-free cleanser and then rinse it with water. Pat dry your skin, instead of rubbing it dry. After that, you can either leave your skin bare or apply a light serum that quickly penetrates to keep your skin moisturized.
Don’t forget to clean your face after the workout as your enlarged pores can trap sweat and grime leading to blackheads, whiteheads and skin irritation. Splash your face with water and pat it dry. Using the soap for cleaning is not necessary. If you want, you can apply a light cream after you have washed your face.
Wearing makeup to the gym is a big no-no. You shouldn’t exercise with cosmetics on. It clogs your pores and restricts in removing toxins from your body. Remember to wash your face properly before your work out session and exfoliate it post-workout to get a glowing and acne-free skin.
