- What is your Passion? What inspired you to be in this industry?
My family has a long line of hairstylists, so not only is the passion for hairstyling in my blood, but I’ve grown up around very talented people who have taught me that making people feel confident and beautiful is the main reason hairstyling is such a rewarding career. The inspiration came from a plateau in my life. There came a time where I just wanted to do something I loved, something I’m passionate about. I always gravitated toward hairstyling and it was in the back of my mind at all times. My family was nothing but supportive, pushing me to reach for what makes me happy ..So I decided to jump right into it.
- Why/How did you initially choose to be a student at Body Pro?
The first time I heard about body pro, was from my father whom recommended it. He said it was close to home and really convenient. When I went in to see the school for the first time, and have a meeting with Mekisha , I knew it was the school for me right away. We share the same humour and i felt very welcomed right from the start. All the pieces fit together and I was so eager to start.
- What were some of your struggles? How did you overcome them?
One thing I struggle with, is theory. I’m more of a practical learner, so when heavy theory comes into play it becomes very difficult for me to remember a lot of things I’ve learned. I’ve overcame some theory difficulties by diving into my textbook. When I’m not at school, I’m at work. So I’ll find time during a 15 min break to read, and soak up as much information as I can.
- What jobs/events/seminars/ did you get involved in while being at Body Pro Beauty?
Within the first 2 weeks of school, I was given an amazing opportunity to work in a salon, working alongside our mentor Perry. I was sent to multiple Redken seminars as well. Body Pro has given me so many great opportunities to get my hands in the industry.
- What are three major attributes Body Pro has given you that helped you be more prepared for your current position or the industry itself?
3 main attributes body pro has taught me are.. Cleanliness. I’ve never been so organized and clean. They taught me that keeping everything clean and tidy can make all the difference in how professional you are. They also taught me that the little things are extremely important, such as going the extra mile to make sure the client is comfortable and happy at all times. Perfection is a big attribute as well. Detailing every updo to the best of my ability and banging out a smooth and sleek blow dry is the most satisfying thing ever.
- What advise would you give a potential student looking to get started in this industry?
Some advice I’d give to a potential student would be, keep your eye on the prize. It’s easy to get distracted by life, and be pulled in many directions, it can be easy to lose focus. You HAVE to remember that if you want to spend the rest of your life doing something you love, stay dedicated to your goal. Treat everyone with respect on your way up, and don’t lose sight of the people who helped get you there!
I’d just like to thank Mekisha and the rest of the Body Pro Beauty instructors for allowing me to be student of the month. Nothing feels better than being rewarded for hard work. It means more than most would think.
